Colombia Fires Army Colonel

Bogota, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Colombian Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos stated on Saturday that an army colonel, whose name was not revealed, was dismissed from his post after his links with paramilitary groups were uncovered.

Santos read a news release from his institution, describing the top official's relations with demobilized Colombian United Self-defense North Bloc chief Rodrigo Tovar, alias Jorge 40.

The colonel, who was still in active service, had those relations with Jorge 40 some years ago.

Santos, along with Military Army general commander Gen. Freddy Padilla de Leon and the Army commander Gen. Mario Montoya, decided to inform judicial authorities of those events.

Those actions could include crimes linked to paramilitarism, violations of human rights, casualties and acts of corruption.
